I regularly undertake seascape commissions, there is something so special about working with a client and bringing a particular scene they love to life. I also usually include personal touches like boats, family, sail numbers and sometimes pets into the painting these bespoke details are very subtle and don’t distract from the overall beauty of the piece but on closer inspection rather a friendly wave to you and what a commission is all about.

A little about my Commission process:

Firstly, we work together to decide on a scene, if it’s a local scene or a scene I am familiar with I am happy to visit and take photos as well as using any photos you have taken, I encourage you to take photos of the scene to share with me as the more imagery the better and it’s always nice to see the scene from your perspective. During this process, I like to get an idea of the space the painting will go in and we also look at paintings of mine you like in terms of colour palette, scene, composition, so I can get an idea of your taste and dimensions for the painting.

Once imagery has been collected I will collage the photos together to create a few scene options compiling all the characteristics of the scene you love in an aesthetic compositions. This is a great opportunity to get a feel of how the scene will look.

When we have decide on a composition I will start to drawing the scene. When I present the drawing this might be a final drawing or initial sketches depending on the complexity of the scene. It’s a great opportunity to see if you would like anything added or tweaked in the scene and gives you a great idea of the composition and feel of the piece. The drawing is the final layer I screen print on top of the painting to bring the narrative of the scene to life.

Next we decide on colour palettes. On our first meeting I like to see the space where the painting is going so I can get a feel for the room, colours, dimensions and light. I like to take tones and pops of colour from your room i.e. curtains, sofa, cabinets and wall colour so the painting fits with the room and also know if it needs stronger or lighter colours to stand out. I will go through the framing options at this stage, if you would like the piece stretched over canvas, with a tray frame as a border or no tray frame or if you would like the piece framed in non reflective art glass etc.
